Customer stories: The downsizers – Maureen and Anthony
Maureen and Anthony are no stranger to the ABN Group. Having built with Webb & Brown Neaves over 30 years ago, Dale Alcock Homes was an easy first choice when it came to their second build.
Although happy with their home of over 30 years, the couple had reached a stage where they felt they had too much space and strongly felt the need to downsize. Like most home hunters, they looked at buying established first.
“We did a wander around and looked at apartments, which at the time seemed like the most logical thing, ” Maureen told us.
But Maureen’s love of gardens, open-space and plenty of natural light ultimately let them to choose to build rather than buy.
“We went into Dale’s and met Kevin Shaw. He was terrific, he really understood what we wanted and didn’t mind us asking a myriad of questions,” Maureen recalled.
“Kevin understood exactly where we were coming from and was very aware right through the process of our budget.
”Kevin, a New Homes Consultant with over 20 years’ experience at Dales, advised the couple to go out and look at the Delano display home in Treeby, Maureen and Anthony obliged, and fell in love with the home straight away.“
As soon as we went into the Delano we could just see the quality. We remember coming through the door and the minute we walked in, we went ‘ooh this is it!” Maureen said.The couples final home design was based off the Delano with tweaks to make it their own and suit their needs.

Of their building experience with Dale Alcock Homes the couple described it as fantastic.
“From the beginning and the dealings we had with Kevin, he instilled a real confidence in us,” the couple said. “The thing I loved, and this is what we found with everyone we dealt with at Dale’s, was they all made you feel like you belonged, they were there to do the best they could for you.”
“Because we are both retired, and we didn’t live too far away, we used to come up to the build about three days a week. We met all the workman, they were great to chat with and were always so very friendly and welcoming, so it was like working with a family.”
Maureen recalled how her friends thought she was ‘crazy’ building because of all the stress usually associated with a build.
“But there was no stress! It was fabulous, it was exciting to watch it grow week by week. Having the back up of our Client Relations Officer Jacqui Mason was wonderful, she was terrific. It was a very stress-less and enjoyable project,” Maureen said.
“For any older people wanting to build I would not hesitate in telling them to go to Dale’s. You don’t look for respect or anything like that, but we just got it. It was marvelous,” Maureen said.
Long after they moved in, it’s a great comfort to the couple that they continue to have the support of Jacqui and their site manager Brad.
“We might not need them, but at least we know they are there,” Maureen said. We asked Maureen and Anthony how it feels to be in their new Dale Alcock home.“It feels wonderful,” they told us.
Despite having lived in and loved their home of over 30 years, Maureen and Anthony were still able to instantly have a feeling of ‘home’ in their new build. “From the minute we moved the furniture in, it was home. We sit here together, and I’d say, ‘Oh I love this place’, and then Tony would say ‘oh I love this place as well’,” mused Maureen.
“When people walk through the front door, they just say ‘oh we love it, and there’s something about this place.
“Not only a home for the couple, their grandkids love the home as well.“You wouldn’t recognise this place once they’re here, there are toys everywhere! They love the outside area as well.”
