How to Bring the Hamptons Home
The Hamptons are all about sophisticated coastal living.
Just ask the wealthy New Yorkers who head there each summer to enjoy time out in their luxury beach houses. Classy and elegant, yet comfortable and relaxed, the Hamptons style may have been inspired by the upmarket homes of Long Island, but it’s the perfect match for Perth’s own climate and coastline.
We’ve curated three key areas to focus on when designing your dream home away from home.
Attention to Detail
It can be easy to want to furnish and style right away, but the key in a Hamptons is the attention to detail. The features such as high ceilings, cornices, skirting boards (we suggest a tall 140mm Federation style!) and architraves will form the foundation of a timeless Hamptons home.
Whether its weatherboards, classic framed panels, tongue and groove, or shiplap, timber panelling is a must if you’re after the distinctive character look.

Layer Your Colours
Think muted and refined when it comes to colour, with chalky whites, pale greys, charcoal, navy and duck-egg blue among the popular choices. Details such as wall panelling, skirting boards and window frames are picked out in fresh white, complimenting dark-stained timber floors and walls in soft grey or a sandy cream. Marble and natural textures such as sisal and linen help complete the look.
Rooms are inviting, so up the comfort factor with lots of layers. Add rugs to timber floors, choose large welcoming sofas, seek out comfy occasional chairs, and scatter throws and cushions. Opt for white shutters at the windows and pick lamps that will add ambience and elegance. There’s room for a little wicker and cane, too, but don’t go overboard. The Hamptons look is all about high-end sophistication.

Showcase Your Kitchen
Few rooms showcase the Hamptons style quite like the kitchen. A large island bench is a must, hardware being classic nickel or brushed gold, glass pendant lights, and benchtops showing off the timeless hues of Calacatta or Carrara marble.
Popular splashback options are white glazed subway tiles or marble to match the benchtops, but keep an eye out for textured tiles as they’re rising in popularity. A Hamptons kitchen usually includes a generous scullery or pantry with open shelving displaying cane baskets and simple white crockery to emphasise the relaxed heart-of-the-home welcome.
